<p>The 136th ARS is the group's flying unit, with the KC-135R assigned since 1994. The unit formed as the 136th Fighter Squadron in December 1948 with the P-47D at NAS Niagara Falls, but moved to nearby Municipal Airport two years later and was placed on active duty between March 1951 and October 1952. The unit became a Fighter-Interceptor Squadron and converted to F-51Hs at the end of 1952, followed by the F-94B in January 1954. The designation was changed to Tactical Fighter Squadron in October 1957 with the adoption of the F-86H, followed by the F-100C from August 1960. The unit was called to active duty between October 1961 and August 1962 for the Berlin crisis and again in January 1968 for the Pueblo crisis, with a period of duty at Tuy Hoa AB, South Vietnam. Returned to state control in June 1969, the unit was redesignated a Fighter-Interceptor Squadron in April 1971 with F-101Bs, and the F-4C from 1982. The F-4D joined the unit in mid-1986, prior to conversion to the F-16A ADF in October 1990.
